Over 12 weeks, starting with the core principles behind all tabletop games, ancient and modern, you’ll learn how these principles apply across a range of popular genres and games, in both their mechanics and their narratives. You’ll then use them to design and prototype your own games within those genres, and playtest them with your fellow students.
Every designer has their own creative process, and you’ll explore the similarities and differences in how the creators of some of the most successful tabletop games approach their work, to find out what might work best for you. You’ll be making games every week, moving from idea generation through to prototyping, testing and working out how to improve them. By the end of this course, you’ll understand what makes different kinds of games engaging and enjoyable for different kinds of players, and you’ll have a portfolio of games you’ve conceived, made and playtested.
