Develop the skills to create interactive audio that packs a punch with our six-week immersive game sound design course. From building your own sound libraries to integrating dynamic audio in playable scenes, you’ll gain the creative and technical abilities to stand out in a competitive industry. 

Taught at SAE Institute campuses across the UK, our audio for games course covers key games industry fundamentals such as how to design original sound effects in Reaper, build adaptive audio and real-time mixes in FMOD, and integrate all audio aspects into Unreal Engine 5.

You’ll discover how established game audio designers work day-to-day, exploring dynamic workflows to keep projects moving. Each week combines hands-on creation with execution, with plenty of opportunities to hear your work in real-world contexts. At the end of the game audio short course, you’ll have a playable scene or polished video capture with fully implemented audio for your portfolio, demonstrating your systems knowledge, creativity and sound design and implementation skills.

WEEK 1: GAME AUDIO FOUNDATIONS AND CRITICAL LISTENING

Begin your game audio design journey by understanding industry context and developing baseline listening and analysis skills. 

  • Learn the difference between interactive audio and linear media

  • Discover the criteria for effective design and mixing 
  • Analyse styles and genres across titles

WEEK 2: SOUND DESIGN TECHNIQUES AND ASSET CREATION 

In your second audio design short course week, you’ll learn how to develop original sounds and variations, ready for implementation into real-world games. 

  • Learn Reaper for editing, layering and processing
  • Explore SFX categories like UI, foley, ambience, creatures, weapons and vehicles
  • Understand layering and editing of pitch, time, modulation, distortion and convolution
  • Discover randomisation and variation strategies

WEEK 3: LIBRARY MANAGEMENT AND ASSET SOURCING

At the halfway point in this interactive audio course London, you’ll learn about professional asset workflows and how you can adopt them to speed up production. 

  • Explore sound effects from online libraries, community resources and commercial packs
  • Discover Soundly, metadata, naming conventions and tagging
  • Integrate sourced and original samples into a usable library for your final project


WEEK 4: MIDDLEWARE, FMOD AND DYNAMIC MIXING

As you develop your skills, you’ll discover how to build interactive systems and mix adaptive music with real-time control.

  • Discover FMOD, including for events, parameters, snapshots, routing and effects
  • Explore adaptive music systems and live mixing approaches
  • Create a dynamic FMOD project with your own assets


WEEK 5: GAME ENGINES AND ADVANCED TOOLS 

Combine audio aspects to create a real-world game scene with FMOD integration inside Unreal Engine.

  • Start Blueprint scripting for audio logic and triggers
  • Refine your FMOD integrations, blueprints and set up 
  • Hook up FMOD events in the Unreal platform 


WEEK 6: CAREERS AND PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT

Wrap up your game audio course in London with industry insights, network connections and a portfolio-ready piece of audio you can use to launch your game sound design career.

Entry Requirements

No formal experience in game sound is needed for this game audio design course, making it accessible for beginners and creatives alike. You should have basic computer knowledge and an interest in creating, playing and learning about sound and games. Familiarity with music software is helpful but not essential. All key programs will be introduced, with step-by-step guidance from tutors.
